With the summer of sport that is already engulfing the
world. It is easy to see why so many people can become inspired by it. The
heroics of athletes can bring nations together, along with excitement and joy
to supporters all around the globe. With this in mind it is easy to see why
people can invest so much emotional energy into sporting films. Whether they be
fighting films, sporting displays against the odds, or a comical underdog
story. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at which sports film is the
best?
Happy Gilmore
One of Adam Sandler’s best a brilliant Happy Madison
production. The film tells the tale of young Happy who wants be a professional hockey
player, yet simply he just isn’t good enough. He then accidentally stumbles
onto Golf, whilst trying to save his grandmother’s house from being repossessed.
Despite not wanting to be a golfer he is. It’s a fantastic bag of laughs and is
a traditional Sandler film. Happy is a decent guy just trying to do the right
thing, and Sandler brings his traditional lazy approach to the role, he is
somewhat ‘Silly
Sandler’ brilliantly portraying the charismatic and energetic Happy
Gilmore.
The Mighty Ducks
A story focusing around a ragtag group of young hockey lads
and their arrogant lazy lawyer of a coach. Possibly the funniest ever sports
film. It’s a coming of age comedy with some mischievous, slap-stick,
toung-in-cheeck comedy moments. A traditional nineties film, which focuses more
on coming together as a team and developing into adults, rather than the strong
mentality of win at all costs. A great watch with is full of laughs!
Rocky
Probably the best boxing move of all time. A small time
boxer gets a once in a life-time opportunity as he gets a shot at the world
title fighting the heavy weight champion. It’s traditional underdog story which
focuses on the average joe little guy. The story clings to the idea of an
American dream. Locations are used brilliantly delivering some quite
exceptional scenes. The film is all about Stallone, his heartfelt performance
delivers some fantastic hits both literally and emotionally.
Cool Runnings
A true story which has been edged into Olympic History. A Jamaican
bobsleigh team have the dream of going to the Olympics. They make it come true.
An inspirational film with some great laughs. Full of some really great scenes
with fantastic surroundings. It’s a very emotional film which is bound to make
the hairs on the back of your neck stand up on end at one point!
Field Of Dreams
Nearly every grown man who watches the film will still cry
at this. An emotional roller coaster of a film. A simple family man continually
sees ghosts of former baseball players. He then makes the incredibly bold and
decisive decision to build a baseball pitch in the middle of his field. The
movie quite possibly has one of the most famous quotes of all time. ‘If you
build it he will come.’ Often
misquoted, but still very well-known. A wonderful film for any true sports
lover. Kevin Costner plays the part to perfection.
